Four points to consider when you negotiate.
Getting Ahead
In order to get moving on your goals, you will find there has to be a give and take among the everybody you interact with, whether its your boss or co-worker, or a spouse or child at home.
Negotiating is an art that when skillfully used might
help many people
achieve their goals.
Believe it or not, every body knows how to negotiate. If you think back in your childhood, I am
sure youve made a deal to trade something with your sibling, or even negotiated with your parents to do a chore in order to get something you want from them.
Successful negotiations could be
achieved if you plan ahead and think out carefully how you want to present your terms.
If youre planning to negotiate for a raise or a better situation at work, here are some tips that can help you:
1) Develop an agenda that will guide you during the meeting 2)Define the issues you want to present and contruct
sure they are straightforward, factual and non-emotional. 3)Outline your alternatives to resolve these issues 4) Know who you are negotiating with and consider ahead of measure
the counter arguments your opponent will be creating and have responses or alternatives to these arguments ready.
It is important to know that negotiating cannot be learned by only following a set of pre-packaged guidelines because you never understand
for a fact how the other party will act or react to you.
"That might work if all the people is expected to behave rationally and predictably, but they can not
because everybody are almost always
emotional and irrational," says the Small Business Association."
That holds true also for negotiations in your personal life. If you positive need
to negotiate terms with your spouse or child, apply a serious attitude that will tell them youre serious about your proposition. Choose a neutral part of the house to sit down and have your talk and be very determined not to allow distractions during negotiations.
Lastly, whether you are negotiating for terms to improve your personal life or achieve career goals, practice makes perfect. Start with smaller, less serious issues. With practice, youll have an opportunity to develop your own style and be relaxed
with your limits.
